10 Steps For Successful Content Creation When You’ve Hit A Creative Block
10 Steps For Successful Content Creation When You’ve Hit A Creative Block
When your job or business requires a lot of creativity, sometimes it can lead to you reaching a breaking point. Or as it’s more commonly referred to, creative block. When this happens, you might feel like you’re unable to come up with fresh ideas.
This problem is seen a lot within the content creation community, because for them to make money, they need to constantly pump out new and original content. So not only is creative block more common for them, but it can be more detrimental as well.
To help out with this problem, I thought I’d compile this list of ten ways to continue creating content if you’re suffering from creative block.
#1 – Allow Yourself Time To Recover
I know taking a break sounds like a counter-intuitive solution, but sometimes it can save the future of your content. If you’re focusing on the long term then it’s better to take a small break now and come back strong, than to keep plugging along with content that isn’t your best.
And by giving yourself some time to recover, your brain some time to reset, and your body time to rest; you’re increasing the chances that you’ll be able to break through your creative block when the break is over.
#2 – Identify The Reason Behind Your Creative Block
This is a step that you can take during your break, or you can wait until after you’ve rested to take on the big question. What caused your creative block? Finding the answer is the key to knowing how to fix it!
It might be something as simple as working to hard and being burnt out; or it might be more complicated, like a lack of motivation for your content creation in general.
Once you’ve discovered the reason, you can come up with a way to help yourself overcome it.
#3 – Start Writing Down Ideas
One of the first things you’ll need to do when you’re ready to get back into the swing of things is begin to write down all your ideas. If you haven’t fully solved your creative block yet, then these ideas might not be the best you’ve ever had. But don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Good ideas, bad ideas, they’re all ideas. And at the end of the day, you’ll probably come out with some that you can use. And others that you can improve to a point where you can use them as well.
But overall, it’s a great creativity exercise to get those juices flowing again.
#4 – Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself
It’s all too easy for us to start beating ourselves up when we feel like we aren’t reaching our full potential. But one of the worst things you can do during a bout of creative block is be too hard on yourself. This will lead to more stress, and will ultimately end up causing the creative block to last longer.
Instead, be kind to yourself and your ideas. Don’t discount a potential project because you haven’t worked out all the kinks. Remember that there’s creative value in every single idea.
#5 – Find A New Source of Inspiration
Another way that you can start to come up with ideas again is to find a different way to inspire yourself, maybe you’ve tapped out your previous resource for now and need something new. There’s nothing wrong with that!
Maybe take inspiration from creators in your field that you admire, or find a way switch up your routine so that you’re experiencing new things which you can potentially gain inspiration from. Something as simple as visiting a new coffee shop could generate a fresh idea.
#6 – Ask People You Trust For Ideas
If you find that you’re still unable to come with ideas by yourself right now, involving someone else could shed a different light on things. They might have a few ideas that will spark new thoughts of your own.
Specifically people that know you and your content, or people that work in your field, are great sources of inspiration and advice. Plus sometimes, it can be nice just to talk things out with those closest to you.
#7 – Recycle Old Ideas
Chances are, that you have lots of old ideas that you never pursued and left in the vault for later. Now is later! And if you have some older ideas that you’ve written down somewhere, now might be the time to bring them to fruition.
You might be thinking that this solution isn’t an infinite one, and that you’ll run out of old ideas to use. But much like writing down any ideas you have, this is simply an exercise to get your creativity back. And create some content to tide you over in the process.
#8 – Give Yourself Some Time, Without Distractions, To Brainstorm
Especially if the reason behind your creative block has to do with real-world stressors, it could really help you get back into content creation if you dedicate some time to it and only it. And even normal, non-stress, distractions can keep us from being at our most productive. So this might be a strategy that you should give a try.
#9 – Don’t Expect Your Content To Be Perfect
If your income depends on pumping out content, it might not be an option to take an extended amount of time off. If this is the case, then you might have to settle with producing content that you’re not 100% pleased with. But that’s normal when you’re going through creative block
And the truth is, most people don’t expect perfect. So maybe even consider letting your audience know what you’re going through, and give them some teasers for the future when you get your creativity back.
But for now, rest assured that your content probably isn’t as lackluster as you feel like it is.
#10 – Keep Going
I know it may seem like the creative block is going to last forever, but it isn’t true. You’ll come out the other side, quite possibly all the better for it. Overcoming obstacles can teach us important lessons, and overcoming creative block can give us tools we didn’t know we needed.
Don’t let creative block be the end of your content creation journey, just view it as a hurdle that you’ll find a way to jump over. Be patient, and good things will come.
